Underwriting Manager, Workers’ Compensation

Reports to:          Director of WC Underwriting
Terms:                  Full Time, Exempt
Location:              Rocklin, CA – Hybrid after training
Salary Range:     $170,000 – $190,000

The Underwriting Manager partners with the Director of Underwriting to execute underwriting strategy and drive profitable growth. This role leads underwriting talent, strengthens operational discipline, and collaborates across teams to ensure sound risk selection, compliance, and consistent performance.

Essential Duties

  • Collaborate with the Director of Underwriting and execute underwriting strategies aligned with organizational goals, profitability, and underwriting market trends
  • Lead and mentor a team of underwriters towards common departmental goals and targets
  • Collaborate in the production, review, and discipline of underwriting authorities
  • Conduct performance evaluations, set goals, and provide ongoing feedback
  • Make recommendations for staff development and training
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance underwriting processes for efficiency and accuracy
  • Collaborate in the innovation and implementation of digital transformation to streamline workflow and enhance data analysis capabilities, and AI
  • Ensure that all company and departmental processes are in compliance with insurance laws, regulations, and company-specific strategies to ensure accuracy, compliance and fairness
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, competitor offerings, and emerging risks in the workers’ compensation insurance market
  • Maintain, prepare, and present reports to provide underwriters, management, and other key stakeholders with metrics for analysis
  • Interface with the Accounting and Audit Department as appropriate to facilitate premium collections, audit dispute resolution, and mediating cancellation issues
  • Interface with Risk Management to facilitate risk reviews, pre quote consultations and manage potential disputes of recommendations
  • Travel 15%
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage a growing team including Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants. Current staff of seven

Minimum Standards/Requirements

  • Extensive Workers’ Compensation technical expertise combined with solid underwriting judgment.

Work Experience

  • 10 years of Workers’ Compensation underwriting experience
  • 3 years of leadership experience
  • Demonstrated experience in driving process improvements and leveraging technology

Education, Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree focused on data analysis, risk management, insurance and data science, finance, economics, or accounting
  • Combined experience/education as a substitute for minimum education

Field Premium Auditor

Reports to:          Premium Audit Manager
Terms:                  Full Time, Exempt
Location:              Southern California (Field-Based, Hybrid)
Salary Range:     $80,000 – $100,000

The Premium Auditor independently conducts on-site workers’ compensation audits and serves as the primary contact for insureds throughout the audit process. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and regulatory knowledge to produce accurate, compliant audit results. The position supports continuous improvement through effective use of data, technology, and emerging tools, including AI, to enhance audit efficiency and accuracy.

Essential Duties

  • Conduct physical, on-site premium audits by collecting, reviewing, and analyzing payroll and operational data from insureds
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for insureds throughout the audit process, providing clear guidance and professional communication
  • Determine final auditable exposures and prepare accurate, well-documented audit findings
  • Ensure audits comply with applicable workers’ compensation rules, bureau regulations (WCIRB/NCCI), and state-specific exceptions
  • Collaborate with internal teams, agents, insureds, and regulatory bureaus to address questions, resolve discrepancies, and support dispute resolution
  • Independently manage assigned audit workload, meeting deadlines while maintaining accuracy and thorough documentation
  • Escalate issues, inconsistencies, or compliance concerns appropriately
  • Utilize Excel and internal systems to organize, analyze, and present audit data efficiently
  • Stay current on industry changes, regulatory updates, and evolving audit tools and technology
  • Travel throughout the greater Southern California Region with occasional Northern California travel as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience, Education, and Certifications

  • Minimum 3+ years of payroll and/or premium audit experience
  • Experience working with WCIRB and/or NCCI
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience or a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • APA designation or progress toward APA preferred
  • WCIRB CompEssentials Certificate preferred

  • Strong working knowledge of workers’ compensation policies and premium audit procedures
  • Ability to work independently and unsupervised in the field and office environments
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a professional, client-focused approach
  • High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, with advanced or strong working knowledge of Excel
  • Openness to continued learning, including the use of AI and automation tools to improve audit processes
  • Bi-Lingual in Spanish a plus

Accounts Receivable Clerk

Reports to:          Controller/VP
Terms:                  Full Time, Nonexempt
Location:              Rocklin, CA – Hybrid after training
Salary Range:     $20-$22/hr.

This entry-level role includes full training in key areas of accounting and administrative support. Responsibilities will include invoicing, payment processing, collections, and maintenance of accurate financial records.

Essential Duties

Administrative

  • Daily incoming mail.
  • Answer incoming calls from the answering service and assist with call routing.
  • Communicate with customers, agents, and underwriting personnel regarding policy changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Accounting:

  • Code checks for deposit
  • Generate and send invoices
  • Process payments via check and electronic methods, and post to assigned policies
  • Perform billing, collection, and reporting activities within specified deadlines
    • Enter self-reporting payrolls
    • Reconcile on-line payments and payroll reports
  • Communicate with customers, agents, and underwriting personnel regarding billing inquiries.
  • Follow up on late payments, send reminders, and attempt to collect outstanding balances
  • Reconcile accounts using aging analysis reports and resolve payment discrepancies
  • Process cancellation notices for nonpayment
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Experience/Education

  • High School or equivalent
  • Accounting coursework or degree preferred but not required
  • 1-2 years of experience in an accounting role preferred but not required

Competency

  • Strong Math Aptitude and ability to comprehend mathematical problems
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly while maintaining accuracy of financial records
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in payments, billing, and account information quickly and accurately.
